Three-Dimensionally Confined Modes in Micropost Microcavities: Quality Factors and Purcell Factors

چکیده
We present detailed calculations of the mode structure of distributed-Bragg-reflector micropost microcavities. Two methods are used: a first-principles, finite-difference time-domain model, and an approximate, heuristic model based on the separation of variables. We calculate modal quality factors, as well as enhancement of spontaneous emission rates, from single quantum dots in the microcavities. Both ideal and realistic post shapes are considered. The two methods give similar results, and are capable of accurately predicting experimentally measured values.

Modified spontaneous emission properties in the presence of confined photon modes inside the three-dimensional (3-D.) optical microcavities are demonstrated. Self-formed pyramidal-shaped semiconductor structures fabricated by selective-area growth technique are utilized as an optical microcavity in which discrete photon modes are generated. Integration of quasi-two-dimensional (2D) films of metal-chalcogenides in optical microcavities permits new photonic applications of these materials. Here we present tunable microcavities with monolayer MoS2 or few monolayer GaSe films. We observe significant modification of spectral and temporal properties of photoluminescence (PL): PL is emitted in spectrally narrow and wavelength-tunable cav...
متن کاملQuantum Dot Spontaneous Emission Lifetime Modification in Optical Microcavities using Oxide Apertured Micropillars
An oxide aperture is used to confine optical modes in a micropillar structure. This method overcomes the limitations due to sidewall scattering loss typical in semiconductor etched micropillars. High cavity quality factors (Q) up to 48 000 are determined by external Fabry-Perot cavity scanning measurements, a significantly higher value than prior work in III-V etched micropillars. Measured Q va...

The spontaneous emission rate and Purcell factor of self-assembled quantum wires embedded in photonic crystal micro-cavities are measured at 80 K by using micro-photoluminescence, under transient and steady state excitation conditions. The Purcell factors fall in the range 1.1 - 2 despite the theoretical prediction of ≈15.5 for the figure of merit. We explain this difference by introducing a po...
متن کاملEfficient source of single photons: a single quantum dot in a micropost microcavity.
We have demonstrated efficient production of triggered single photons by coupling a single semiconductor quantum dot to a three-dimensionally confined optical mode in a micropost microcavity. The efficiency of emitting single photons into a single-mode traveling wave is approximately 38%, which is nearly 2 orders of magnitude higher than for a quantum dot in bulk semiconductor material. At the ...
